Senior Environment Artist

SAFEHOUSE is looking for an experienced Environment Artist with some serious technical skills for multiple unannounced AAA game and film projects. We are currently in greatest need of an artist to tackle a specific game project for a long-running, industry-leading Japanese IP with global, mass-market appeal, which is forging ahead into the next generation using Unreal Engine 5. In your role at SAFEHOUSE you will work closely in concert with a dedicated Tools Programmer to help produce new tools and plug-ins to both help yourself and our Environment Art team create fantastic new worlds for our players and viewers. The ideal candidate for the job will have a deep understanding of both the technical and creative side of environment art creation. They will be able to confidently act as a bridge between the Art Team and the Engineers and shepherd a design from concept to the final touch to help show the world what this legendary franchise can do in UE5.

 At SAFEHOUSE you will get to work alongside leading artists, designers, and some of the best talent in the industry such as Takuya Suzuki (Diablo III, StarCraft II, FINAL FANTASY XV), and leading Unreal Engine innovator Erasmus Brosdau in a small, tight-knit team on our latest project. SAFEHOUSE as a company has worked on or contributed to projects touching just about every major IP produced by Japan in the last 5 years. We also have several projects in process right now that are very prominent, global IPs, and are currently in development with Netflix on a series that has yet to be announced.

This position has the possibility of working remote or hybrid. While we would love for you to join us working out of our offices in Tokyo if this is impractical or an impossibility we are happy to discuss a remote position instead.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 shipped titles or 5+ years of experience in gaming or films

  • High-level understanding of Unreal Engine, including some amount of blueprint scripting

  • Prior experience as an Environment artist or experience in a role that required the creation of environment art, level dressing, and use of Landscape in UE

  • Strong working knowledge of industry-standard art applications such as Maya, Blender, Zbrush, Substance Painter, etc.

  • Experience creating 3D assets, especially stylized (modeling, UV, textures)

  • Some experience in games development for lower-power devices (Switch ,etc.) and the little tricks necessary to get great-looking environments with the associated processing restrictions

  • Willing to work closely with a dedicated Tools Programmer when required

  • Willing to tackle technically challenging tasks related to environment art and level creation and keep them moving through the pipeline

  • Ability to coordinate between technical and art team members

Pluses:

  • Thorough knowledge of game engine workflows using Unreal Engine

  • Any understanding of C++ is a strong positive

  • An understanding of effective asset creation and optimization

  • Any experience with VFX creation and the use of UE5’s Niagara system

  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative

  • Willing to explore new techniques bring them into projects
